The turf has been in place for nearly two years and finally, Riverton will play their first varsity football game on it.
The Wolverines were awarded a new track and activities complex by the State Facilities Commission two years ago. They put in a state of the art track oval and a synthetic turf field made by the same company that installed the turf at Texas Stadium, the former home of the Dallas Cowboys. They were not, however, given funding to put in bleachers, a press box, concessions, locker rooms, rest rooms, scoreboard, or other items. Those were deemed "added amenities" by the SFC and were to be funded by the school district.
A bond election in 2007 that would have funded the completion of the project failed by a slim margin. 2007 was a non-election year for other offices and the bond issue was the only vote on the ballot. By law, the school couldn't put another bond up for vote in 2008 when more voters were likely to turn out.
Currently the Wolverines are using Tonkin Stadium which was erected in 1937. Heavy, wet snow in Fremont County on Thursday and Friday made for alot of standing water in the bowl-type stadium and thus postponed the Riverton vs #2 Torrington football game till 2 pm today. The snows have melted some over the weekend, but, that just made for more standing water in Tonkin. Therefore, the Wolverines will host the Trailblazers at the new complex at Riverton High School. There have been JV and junior high games at the field, but, this will be the first Varsity contest for the Wolverines. They have hosted a few track meets at the complex including the 4A West regionals last spring. A brand new scoreboard and PA system are also in place.
The pre-game hits the are at 1:25 pm on 93.9 FM KTAK Radio. Click the link to listen to it live as the kick off comes at 2:00 pm.
