CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming State Veterinarian is advising horse breeders and veterinarians in the state to be on the lookout for a contagious equine disease. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said more than 90 horses in 28 states have been exposed to contagious equine metritis since it first emerged in December.
The disease is highly contagious and can result in temporary infertility and cause mares to abort their young. It does not affect other animals or humans. Thoroughbred horses appear to be more severely affected by the disease than other breeds. Wyoming so far does not have any cases, but the state veterinarian warns horse breeders and veterinarians to be vigilant for the disease and careful about importing breeding horses.
