WHSAA Commish Ron Laird

Every two years the September meeting of the WHSAA has huge importance. This year is no exception.

The State Board of Directors for high school activities meet today and early on in the agenda are second reading items for two big items.

One: A Football only reclassification proposal.

Two: An All Sports BUT football reclass proposal.

As far as the quadrant went:

the North East said YES to the football only proposal, but, didn't make a motion to pass the other.

The North West also said YES to the football only but defeated the All Sports BUT football proposal.

South East passed both.

South West Passed the football only, but defeated the other.

The football only proposal is where the top ten teams by enrollment would be in 4A with breaks down the line after that. 3A would then have 12 teams and then 16 in 2A. That would put a great amount of teams in 1A, however, there has been a lot of interest in 6 man football from a number of schools that currently play 11 man football and others that are willing to start a program. Six man football would also bring Meeteetse and Ten Sleep back into Wyoming conferences instead of Montana where they now play.

The other big proposal would reclass all sports except football. In it, the top 14 teams would be in 4A. That moves Cody back to 4A and brings along Jackson. To be more fair and accurate, the committees looked at the new ADM numbers over the summer to decide better breaks if possible in the classifications. As you can see by the quadrant voting, this proposal doesn't look to have much steam going into the State meeting.

There are several other items ranging from basketball warm up times and soccer overtime procedures to flash photography indoors and increased academic requirement proposals.

There will also be a 6-Man Football only meeting on Wednesday.
