Riverton man survives crash

September 26, 2008 - 11:38 a.m. EST

A Riverton man survived a head-on crash Thursday morning northeast of Evanston, according to a release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol. Danny K. Wimp, 61, was treated and released from Evanston Regional Hospital for injuries received when his 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer crashed into a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup. The pickup driver, Ralph A. Najarro, 24, of Evanston, died in the crash.

Sgt. Stephen Townsend of the Wyoming Highway Patrol said Najarro was southbound on US 189 when for unknown reasons his vehicle crossed over the center line and moved into the northbound lane of travel. Wimp, who was pulling an empty flatbed trailer, said he broke hard in an attempt to avoid the collision. The two vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lane.

Najarro’s vehicle came to rest off the roadway in the barrow ditch and Wimp’s tractor trailer combination came to rest blocking both north and southbound lanes of travel. The highway was temporarily closed while troopers directed traffic around the crash site. Najarro was transported to the Mountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City where he died Thursday afternoon. Wimp was wearing a seatbelt. Najarro was not.
