An “old eyesore” on East Park Avenue in Riverton should soon come down.
The former hospital building, abandoned for more than 20 years, is scheduled for demolition.
The Riverton City Council awarded a bid for the job Tuesday night to Environmental Resource Group for a little over $126,000. Riverton City Administrator Carter Napier said the city hopes to recover the costs of the demolition through sale of the property.
The city purchased the property in 2004 from a private owner for $106,000, with the intent of destroying the property. The demolition plan came to a standstill when the city could not find a company to step forward to tackle the asbestos removal.
Purchase of the property by no means meant the city intended to become land developers, said Napier, at the time of the sale.
He said the city’s primary intention was simple to remove a “significant blight” from the community.

Despite all the problems related to it, asbestos is still imported and used in the U.S. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. imported and used an
estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007. (See
http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/c...) Also, the U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill H.R. 6903 The Bruce Vento Ban Asbestos and Prevent Mesothelioma Act to ban the future importation and use of asbestos (it is already banned in 40
countries) and provide funding for medical research into effective treatments for asbestos-related diseases. (See http;//www.banasbestos.us)
