NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera had surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday and is expected to resume throwing in three months, the American League team said.

The timetable should allow the Panamanian-born Rivera to be ready for spring training in February.

Rivera, who turns 39 next month, had one of his best statistical seasons in 2008, converting 39 of 40 save opportunities and posting a 6-5 record with an earned run average of 1.40, second lowest of his 14-year career.

The right-hander, however, complained of pain in his shoulder and was found to need surgery to shave down a calcium deposit on the joint at the top of his shoulder.
