Riverton Mayor John Vincent said the city needs to be listed as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by the Northern Arapaho Tribe against the state and county regarding land jurisdiction.
The city has not been named in the suit, but Vincent said the city needs to be named a defendant in order to have a say in the matter. Riverton city officials will discuss the lawsuit during its regular meeting, Tuesday, which starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
The tribe filed suit last Monday in federal court in Cheyenne to challenge taxation of tribal members on lands north of the Wind River. In the suit, the tribe contends it still has jurisdiction over the lands opened for non-Indian settlement in 1905 and that tribal members are being illegally taxed.
