GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is planning public hearings in five cities ahead of writing a new plan for energy development in northeast Wyoming.
Hearings are planned over two weeks in November in Gillette, Sheridan, Kaycee, Buffalo and Wright. The hearings will launch a 4-year process of developing a resource management plan for public lands in Johnson, Campbell and Sheridan counties.
The planning will occur as the BLM faces increasing pressure to protect sage grouse and other species including mountain plover, hawks and elk.
The BLM also is likely to face increasing pressure to allow more energy development. The area is rich in coal-bed methane and coal reserves.
The plan is expected to be implemented in 2012.
