Reports of a tornado near Thermpolis, a funnel cloud near Riverton, and more keep weather watchers on their toes.

Thursday afternoon brought reports of a tornado near Thermopolis. The twister was reported about 8 miles north town near Lucerne. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

A number of citizens reported a funnel cloud to the south of Riverton around 2 Thursday afternoon. It did not touch down.

Thursday evening another strong storm brought hail, heavy rain, and lightning to the city.

It was a compact storm as only .01” was reported at the National Weather Service Office at the Riverton Airport. A half an inch was measured in a gauge near Jackson School. The Riverton Country Club had reported an inch of hail and heavy rain for a brief period of time.

The National Weather Service sent an investigative team to Dubois to survey damage from storm that blew into town Wednesday afternoon. Damage was confined to the area of 1st Street and Marciana. A roof was blown off a public restroom, a window was blown out and damage was reported to a number of houses and vehicles. The team believes the damage may have been done by an F-0 tornado, which is the weakest of the Fujita Scale.

On a related note, the Riverton National Weather Service reports that the three to five inches of rainfall across central Wyoming since May 21st has pushed Lander into the number one spot for the wettest May over the last 116 years with 6.12”. Downtown Riverton looks like it will hold onto the number two spot to close out the month. The 4.62” measured as of Wednesday evening was the wettest since 1921.
