County Claims Several Track Champs on Day One
Track and Field

Luke Bromley stood on the top stand of the podium twice on Thursday at the 2008 State Track and Field Championships in Casper. The Lander Junior won the 3A 3200 meters and was part of the Tigers' Championship 4 by 800 relay with Mitch Brauneis, Kyle Noisyhawk, and Eric Ragan.

Wind River Senior Zane Bell won the 2A boys 3200 meters. He edged out Wyoming Indian Sophomore Caleb HerManyHorses by 2 seconds to deny Caleb a repeat state title. Bell will run at Wyoming for the Cowboys next year.

Other State Champions from Fremont County included the Lander girls 3200 meter relay team of Domeika Meredith, Kendra Siebigteroth, Kayla Barry, and Larkin Guenther.

There were five State Records tied or broken on Day One.

Thursday got going with the 3200 meter runs and right away a state record fell. Saratoga Freshman Shelby Hohnholt won the 1A girls race in record breaking fashion going 11:51.11. That beat the old standard set last year by Snake River's Brooke Lee at 12:02.32.

The other record broken in the morning session came just a bit later as Burlington Sophomore Paige Neves tied the 1A Girls Pole Vault State Record. She had to beat the current record holder in the competition to tie the mark as Alisha Wardell went 9-06.00 last year in winning the event. Wardell went out at 9 even this year while Neves cleared a season best 9-06 to win it. The Lady Huskies scored major points in the pole vault as Michelle Fabricus finished third.

Derek Kokesh, a Junior from Upton, went 14-00 feet in the pole vault. Kokesh now adds his name to that of Whitney Neves of Burlington and Kurt Guidice of Chugwater who have also gone 14 feet at state.

Newcastle Junior Taylor Farella beat the 3A field in the long jump by over a foot. Her jump of 18-01.5 was enough to win by a large margin AND break the 3A State record set by Wheatland's Angie Hellbaum (17-09.5 in 2004). For Farella, it is her second straight 3A long jump Championship.

Gillette's Emily Moore put on a show in the 4A girls long jump. She was already the Overall and 4A record holder going 18-09 last year. This year, Moore went 19-02.25 to break that record and win the 4A girls long jump for her third straight year. It will be exciting to see just how far she goes next year as a Senior.

Looking at Day one of the team standings, Burlington has a five point lead on Cokeville in the 1A girls. Saratoga is 4 points up on the Huskies in the 1A Boy's Race.

In 2A, Mountain View and Lingle are living up to their expected show down. Mountain View won 3A last year while Lingle ran away with 1A. Now both are 2A and are separated by 5.5 points after a day with the Lady Buffs on top. 2A's boys race has Lusk 7 up on Wind River and 8 on Guernsey.

3A sees the Lander girls with an early lead and Douglas 8 points back. The 3A boys race has Park County on top with Powell 9.5 points behind Cody.

4A is led by by Rock Springs and Central who are tied at 32 each. Gillette has a 2 point lead on Central in the 4A boys.
