NEW YORK (Reuters) - Point guard Derrick Rose of the University of Memphis was taken by the Chicago Bulls with the first pick of the 2008 NBA Draft on Thursday.

Rose averaged 14.9 points per game and 4.7 assists in leading Memphis as a freshman to the finals of the NCAA Tournament.

The 6 ft 3 ins (1.91-metre) Rose, who grew up in Chicago, said: "It feels great to be back at home."

The Miami Heat followed by selecting Kansas State forward Michael Beasley with the second choice.

Beasley averaged 26.2 points and led major U.S. colleges by averaging 12.4 rebounds a game.
